Rip-off GREEDFLATION at its best

by DN on Dec 4, 2023
1 out of 5 stars

Upon receiving renewal policy for this year I see over a 25% increase . So over 35%in the last 3 years.

Claims free and a client for 20 plus years. My insurance should be decreasing by rights.

On contacting them I was informed that it was due to inflation... 35% in three years....

Pure and simple GREED.

Just a disgusting company.

DO NOT USE THEM!!!!

Horrible customer service.

After 10+ years with them 6+ with auto insurance, and business insurance for 4-5 years through them, I will never recommend, nor use them again. A couple of years ago I should've cancelled then my wife got into an accident, at first they were nice but, when the other driver claimed she was at fault the Cooperators underwriter or whatever they're called (The one who deals with accident payouts and such) treated her terrible, not returning calls, being mean in tone on the phone when we got through. Finally, I went and took pictures to prove that she (Wife) did have the right of way in the roundabout due to signage, even the police officer said if there were laws for roundabouts he would've charged the other driver (not sure if Ontario finally put in some laws but, at that time the officer said there are no laws in the highway traffic act for roundabouts) after sending them that information they again started being nice. Another issue is, I did have a speeding ticket 8+ years ago, and they (Insurance) told me when it is removed I'm sure they said it takes four years to come off, I'll notice a decrease on my rates, well that wasn't true, the ticket now been off my file for three-four years, yet they kept on rising our insurance rates every renewal making excuses each time, (higher claims across Canada, all insurance rates raised etc.) This year 2022 was the last draw as they wanted $188 for car insurance and over $34 for rental insurance which would be over $200.00 a month. I started calling around and found $122 a month (car) and $38 a month for rental both with higher payouts and lower deductibles from another insurer. Which saves me over $480 a year. When asked why my insurance is very cheap with them they told me it's because of our good driving history. Yet Cooperators keep rising my rates which is mind-boggling. I cancelled with Cooperators right away stating to be cancelled Aug 1st. 2022 and I asked about cancellation fees since I was so close to my insurance renewal the lady at Cooperators told me they will only charge me $40 something on my credit card, for the remainder of the time. A few days ago I noticed 40ish from them taken off my credit card, okay last payment... Well, yesterday I noticed $176 taken... They turned around and charged me $176 which I didn't agree too, and when I called I got hung up on because I told her straight out they were gorging me in pricing over the years. Talking to the fellow at the call center (Who was 1000% more respectful and understanding) it seems they didn't put the correct date in for cancellation as it was supposed to be Aug 1st. The woman from Jennifer's office right out refused to call me back and emailed me trying to say there are confirmation of an August 17 2022 cancellation, which isn't correct as my new policy starts Aug 1st with another insurer and I requested Aug 1st cancellation. Why would I be an idiot and pay two insurance companies? I also didn't care about a few weeks cancellation fee as that is my renewal date. Every time I call this office they transfer me to the call center, they can't deal with auto, and they don't put in the information correctly, Jennifer shouldn't be an owner as she or her staff misses things up I noticed in another review on Google the same concern of missing things up, she seems to never be in the office, her staff refuses to transfer me to her, they refuse to acknowledge when they're in the wrong like in this situation. One cluster fudge after another with this insurance company. Look around there are much cheaper insurance companies out there, this insurance company is like a pyramid scheme.

Home insurance renewal quote

by Disgruntled past client on Feb 12, 2022
1.5 out of 5 stars

Am in the Cheticamp area. Had been with Cooperators insurance for years and paid about $1,400. When I was quoted the renewal this past September they quoted me $4700! To say I was shocked would be an understatement! Firstly, I wasn't living in the home the other years, was here seasonally. I also upgraded my fuses to a breaker, so my quote should have actually gone down! I know of people here who are paying $1,200-1,500 per year and actually have Airbnb running from their homes and yes the insurer knows. I was beyond disgusted. The person who had to call me to give me the news about this high quote was actually embarrassed. In any case, think it was deplorable. Obviously, I am with another company now.

Did you know that Ontarians pay, on average, $47/month in homeowners insurance? Looking to change your home insurance or simply want ensure that you do not overpay? Our home insurance quotes are among the most competitive.

What the?

Was with them for 8 years, last year I paid $1200 for the year. When it came to renewing in September I was more than shocked when told my yearly rate had gone up to $4700! I've never had a claim AND had upgraded from fuses to breakers, new hot water heater, plus… I was living away before, so it was seasonal moved back in July for good. The person who called me to tell me the nee rate apologized profusely and said even she was shocked. I questioned it to the top guy there and he blamed Covid for rising prices!😵‍💫..meanwhile a friend who lives in the same area, much older house, lives away and airbnbs it paying 1100. In any case, I was not only shocked but furious. I moved on to another provider and am happy.

12 years, 0 claims, ripped off

by UnCooperator on Mar 27, 2021
1 out of 5 stars

After 12 years with Cooperators with 0 claims, I got a renewal policy with a 40% increase on my home policy and a 30% increase in my auto policy. Attempts to negotiate reasonable rates with them did not work and of course, other insurance companies did offer more competitive rates.
Called to cancel 1 day late and they are charging me an obscene termination fee of $510 dollars.
After spending 45 minutes on the phone they couldn't provide me with the information of how the cancellation fee is calculated and it is not stated in the policy document either under the cancellation section so very very shady practice to put it in mild words.
I honestly would have expected a bit more sympathy after 12 years with zero claims.
From my perspective, they really don't care about you as a customer and will rip you off at the smallest chance available.
I cannot imagine what would have happened if I had had a claim.
I would stay away from this company.

Farm policy 20% rate increase

by Robert on Mar 1, 2021
3.5 out of 5 stars

I don't know what to think. I have had a farm policy with Co-Operators for years with no claims, or changes. I renewed my policy for 2021 and noticed it had a 20% increase with no explanation. I can find nothing online to support this, most sites suggest 2-3% as to be expected. I wonder if the rate increase was supposed to be calculated at 1.02 % and the girl made an error of 1.20 %. Easy mistake, but her dad owns the brokerage and, well, I'm at a loss as to find the answer. Yes, I will be looking around. If I find what I expect to, I will be taking multiple policies with me.

Are you a condo unit tenant? Remember that neither your condominium corporations' policy nor your landlord's insurance policy protects you as a tenant (3rd part liability, contents, etc.). If you do not have your own insurance policy, get your condominium insurance quote today.

wrong calculation

I renewed my apartment insurance, an agent gave me the price for the year, I paid in full the same day. A month later I get letter says I owe money, I called and they said: "oh, that is a form letter so I don't actually owe that money". Then the agent checks my account and comes back with: "well, you do still owe money as the amount you paid for year was calculated wrong so you actually owe..." I felt this was not my error, and how many other people had this happen to? I spoke with a supervisor she just said: "well, it was a human error"... I said - if I hadn't called I would never have known! She said eventually they would have audited and I would have been notified, I asked: "when do they audit?" She said she couldn't tell me. Will be changing my company next renewal...I would now but can't cancel without $ penalty. So, for this company, they are pleasant when taking your money but not so when the error is theirs. Buyer beware!
