Terrible car insurance do not use!!

by Samantha on Apr 30, 2024
1 out of 5 stars

My car was hit by another driver while I was parked, and it was totaled. This insurance company was not at all helpful. They had me contact the other person's insurance and refused to help me at all. When I contacted the other person's insurance, they were shocked because I should not be calling them at all. Long story short, I’ve been paying for cabs the past week. Haven’t heard anything from my insurance. DO NOT USE

They don't care

We had home/auto/recreational vehicle insurance with Johnson Unifund, for 6 years. I was rear-ended (no-fault) first incident I've ever had having to make an insurance claim in 40 years of driving. I was assigned a claims person, this person never returned voicemails, emails in 3 months, I had to escalate my complaint to a supervisory position, in turn, I was told that they are "overwhelmed" at the moment as was really no help what so ever. It took me 4 months of constant calling only to hold for up to 45 minutes, to get my car repaired. At a time when a person is in an injured state, dealing with doctors and therapists, then having to fight to get the repairs completed in a timely manner was unacceptable these people truly do not care for their customers well being, just keep increasing rates and collecting their money, we have taken our insurance needs elsewhere, do yourself a favour and pass this company by.

If you have a good driving record in AB, you should pay around $110/month (women - $105/month and men - $113/month). Do you overpay? Get an Alberta car insurance quote to start saving.

Poor Customer Service

If I could give a rating of zero I would. Live in Fort McMurray, just had a flood in downtown. We lost our car and our adjuster doesn't return our calls. Moved into another place, outside of Flood Zone, (Thickwood Area). I called to change my address and was told I won't have my tenant insurance anymore as they are not rewriting policies in Fort McMurray as of now. Now I sit with no insurance. There is not a friendly company to deal with and they do not care about their customers. JOHNSONS! Don't you think Fort McMurray residents have been through enough?

No Communication!

Extremely upset and disappointing service. We had a claim 2+ weeks ago, not-at-fault accident, no one has ever called/e-mail or even tried to contact us. The vehicle is at a total loss and we need to know the replacement value but after numerous phone calls and e-mail from us, we have yet to receive any communications from our adjudicator. Very disrespectful and extremely rude from the organization of this size to be treating their customers this way. Do not waste your time or money on them. They do NOT appreciate your business.

10+ happy years

My wife and I have held home and auto insurance with Johnson Insurance (Unifund) for 10+ years. In that time we've had three auto claims for two not-at-fault accidents and one windshield repair. Each time a claim was necessary, the service was excellent. Our rates increased minimally three years ago and, since then, have decreased by $6, $100 and $210 respectively.

Our policies renew next month and I am shopping around for rates elsewhere. Only one company has been able to beat Johnson's rates with similar coverage. Despite my 10+ happy years, I may switch to save money (i.e. 40%).

Did you know that on average Ontario drivers with good driving records pay $1,805/year in auto insurance? Is your insurance rate higher? Get a free car insurance quote and start saving today.

Smooth Total Loss Claim

by Maplesuga on Jun 5, 2014

I had a total loss claim for which I was deemed at fault. From my initial call, to the subsequent four adjusters I spoke to, all but one were wonderful. I was able to get ahold of all adjusters (except the one) immediately, and they were quite pleasant, considering the circumstances. I am still working through the injury/liability parts of the accident, but in terms of the car replacement - the no-charge "depreciation add-back" meant that I got the full value of the car that we paid almost a full year ago - and it was less than 2 weeks from the day of the accident to the day my claim cheque arrived, during which time the rental car was paid for. Impressive.

My one concern is that I was given a ticket (although the officer advised me to fight it, which I am), so we will see how that affects my insurance on renewal - although my accident forgiveness was intact, so I won't be dinged for the accident itself.

Overall, they're a bit more expensive than some other places (but not many), but they're very worth it. I'll be recommending them to everyone I know that needs insurance.

An awful experience!

I have been insured by Johnson/Unifund for 15+ years. In 30 years of driving I have never had to make a claim. Following an accident that required extensive repairs we contacted J/U Insurance, and this was only an afterthought, as we hadn't even considered this initially. Our experience was not pleasant with the appraiser on the telephone and I felt very judged and and not understood. I understand that many questions are necessary to understand a situation, however I felt that I was being overly questioned about certain aspects of what was being described. Further, our auto shop expressed concerns about the treatment that they received by a visiting appraiser. Six months after the fact, they continue to talk with us about the verbal abuse (raising of voices and cursing towards the shop owner) that they experienced during this process. The shop felt that they were being accused of over inflating their prices (we have often commented on the "decent" pricing of this shop) and not being honest. This shop also reduced prices for us and did not charge us for some aspects of the repair due to the heavy cost of these repairs. Long story short, we are in the process of moving on to another company, for a savings of $800+ a year for both of our cars. I'm not sure if all companies are like this as we don't have prior experiences dealing with insurance following an accident, but we clearly were not happy with the large charge that we had as J/U refused to pay the full amount.

I was able to speak with my agent and to deal with my adjuster on a positive side. I got the help I need in language I could understand.
