I bought a fixer-upper and got insurance from Sonnet insurance online.
The policy said I was covered for flooding and for sewer backup. The property was next to a stream so in September of 2020 I applied for a permit from WAWA (watercourse and wetland alteration) to place boulders next to the stream to prevent possible flooding in the spring.
It flooded in December of 2020 pushing soil up under the house and lifting the toilet and the pipes leading to the septic tank. Some of the pipes were broken and displaced. The support beam at the front of the house was washed away and support beams were cracked. The door was removed. The foundation was back washed away.
My claim was denied because they said the home was vacant for more than 30 days. It was not vacant!
Two or three months after the flood they cancelled my insurance for no reason.
I appealed to two separate ombudsmen and was denied.
I am now taking legal action.
Sonnet is terrible.
Had a great experience when I effortlessly signed up online. 1 year later, they increased my rate by 40% for no good reason, no claims or anything along those lines. When I called up, they were unable to justify the change. Buyers beware, the first year may look attractive, but they will increase things for no reason the following year. Others have experienced the same thing.
Canadians pay, on average, approximately $20 per month in tenants insurance. Do you rent or plan to rent a property and want to reduce insurance costs? We will help you get a cheap tenant insurance quote today.
They will give you a cheap price for the first year to lure you in, and as soon as your renewal is up Bammm, %200+ premium increase with no claims valid reason. The company simply doesn't care about customers if you don't mind changing insurance in a year
I say use this company for a year, and dump them like your garbage before your renewal is up, and be aware of the automatic renewal policy these scammers have.
After paying regularly upfront for 3 years. No, option to cancel the insurance in the web portal. And if you delete your CC info they directly mark you as a defaulter, hit your credit score and ban you for 3 years. SCAM much?
Please don't be fooled by the first year quote you get. My home insurance went up from $900 to $3600 in the second year. Had difficulty cancelling. DO NOT BE FOOLED
The most fraudulent company I’ve ever come across. They quoted me $175 for home insurance but charged me $800!!! Yes, a month. $800 a month for a $450k home... Exactly half of my mortgage. I thought clearly they made a mistake so I called them twice. Both times they said: - No, that’s correct! I wondered why they didn’t want to review any of the details with me again... maybe they got something wrong? Nope. They said if I didn’t like it I could get other insurance and they don’t charge a cancellation fee. Another company quoted me $162 a month. Sonnet said I should ask the other company to backdate my new insurance and that’s the only way I could get my money back... guess what. That’s a fraud. They are liars and cheats and steal money from good honest people. Stay away.
Sonnet more than doubled my rates with no notice. I will look elsewhere and wish I had never signed up with them.
I had to insure our house in New Market, ON. Sonnet's rate has been 1/3 of the rate of another provider, Square One Insurance and 1/2 of the rate provided by TD Insurance. I was able to purchase the policy online and that was more convenient than spending hours on the phone with an insurance agent. Quite happy with their service so far.
Got a quote from Sonnet for my condo townhouse in Toronto. Very short application process and my rate was almost the half of what I am paying now even after I added my fiancee's engagement ring. Very happy with the price and will be switching over. I like the fact that I see all the details of my future policy - for example, limits for sewer backup, flooding, and other possible issues. Have not tried though calling them yet - I hope the will honour their quote.
They made it impossible for me to pay them, sent me to collections without further communication despite repeated attempts to give them the $90 I owed, and then refused to send me an apology email meaning I'm stuck with higher rates elsewhere. Also their ombudsmen, and the ombudsmen of their parent company Economical Insurance, like to not return phone calls.
