Go elsewhere

We had always felt well insured with Johnson Unifund. We had a windshield chip claim 6 years ago, and they bent over backwards to accommodate us & facilitate the repair. However, for the past 3 years, we’ve had huge increases to both our home & auto policies. This year our home policy went up 20%, despite a stellar credit rating (don't even get me started on that!) and no claims. I spoke with 3 different representatives trying to find ways to bring down the cost of our home policy: I was told to “go shop around if I felt their prices were too high”. The last representative reminded that I had “called several times, was I expecting a different price?” I gave up, pulled our auto policy & went elsewhere, saving $1258 for 2019-2020.
Coverage keeps changing but rates keep going up. Very poor customer service. Tried for 3 days to get an answer to the question. Never did get through to a human being. Finally switched to another company.
So 2 claims and they cancel your Insurance? 1. My child broke a window. 2. I was robbed and the house was contaminated with сarfentanyl as the crooks were cooking drugs in my house. I even chased them down in my car as we walked in on them and 1 plead guilty and served time in jail for his crimes and the cancel insurance? Typical insurance company soon as you need them they throw you away like trash!
Customer service was great when I was shopping around, part of the reason I chose Johnson. But the moment after I purchased the policy is when the customer service experience turned south. They did a home inspection, after issuing the policy (which seems odd to me) and made demands that I complete a list of outdoor repairs (mostly exterior painting) in the middle of December, within 90 days. When I told them it was unreasonable to ask me to paint the exterior siding in the winter, they basically listed off a bunch of hoops I’d have to jump through for an extension that they stated would “probably be declined” by the underwriter. It’s generally impossible to get through on their phone lines. I’ve tried multiple times at different points in the day and when I do get through they are generally quick to defer this to someone else who, I then have to wait, even longer to speak to. Will be switching at renewal and feeling thankful I never had to file a claim with them.
We had an issue with our house and called to see if the insurance would cover it. They wouldn’t and then ask us for weeks to provide proof that we had made the repair. As I was working away I couldn’t get it done within the timeline they had set. Meanwhile, remember there was no open claim and we had provided proof that there was no risk of any damage to the home. Long story short they cancelled our policy without notification and now refuse to re-insure. They went so far as to tell me that we would have a hard time finding anyone to insure us now that we were dropped by one company and that we should have provided the proof within the timeline they set. Absolutely horrendous service and treatment, avoid these crooks at all costs.
Johnson Insurance refused to cancel my deceased Mother's policy unless they heard from both executors of the estate, they were contacted and sent a copy of the death certificate and they continued to take the payments out of my Mothers bank account knowing full well she was deceased and her condo was sold. They even sent a registered letter addressed to my Mother 16 months after her death asking for payment or they would cancel her policy!!! Run, don't walk, away from this sham of a company!! They don't deserve the one star I was forced to give in order to review this mess of a company. Their customer service was no help either!!
Opened mail on a Friday night after work to find out Johnson cancelled my auto policy on 2 vehicles a week before with zero notification and zero explanation. Have been a loyal customer for 10 years with home insurance, 3 automobiles, 1 boat and a camper. Had only 1 claim from a hit and run 2 years ago. Of all the things we have insured with them, they selected 2 vehicles to cancel coverage on. I cannot even grasp what predicament we might have been in if we had been in an accident during the time we had no insurance coverage without our knowledge.
They are cheap but they are horrible to deal with in every possible way. They told us our policy was cancelled and continued to take payments from us even though we talked to them and sent various emails stating we were cancelling our policy for both home and auto and they are still arguing with us that we didn't cancel the policy. And when we made a claim, they were horrible and expensive and not upfront about what was required. A month after we had the work done they started making requests for pictures before (which we obviously couldn't get because the work was done), during and after. And for a receipt. I had asked them prior to the work being done what they needed and I had emails stating "nothing"
So this bunch of geniuses refuse to stop charging me insurance on a house I no longer own or live in. They refuse to cancel the policy because my ex moved to BC and hasn't confirmed the house is sold. Apparently, neither the agreement of purchase and sale (with her signature on it) nor the information from the Government of Nova Scotia deed registry is enough proof. They also refuse to put in writing that they will cover said home until such time as the policy is cancelled. They say this is because I no longer live there. That is the kind of logic you will get if you deal with these people. Spend your hard-earned money with another company.

Had house and auto, I was paying 204 a month with no claims other than one that was 10 years ago for an accident. Every year my insurance was going up. I was thinking of purchasing a new car which I was driving a 3-year-old RAV4 at the time and my insurance was gonna go up about 15 dollars a month, my RAV4 was still worth more than the new car. I called around and I got both home and car for 127 a month. Big difference! So, I called Johnson. But a couple of weeks later my new payment came out which it was supposed to and to my surprise so did the old one. So now I don’t have enough money to cover my other bills, I called them and they said they can’t do anything, they are worse than the government when they owe you the money you have to wait just like them. And they told me they won’t know if it cleared or what I would be getting back of that payment. I felt like I was robbed the last couple of years with them, and now I know I am. And they don’t care I asked if anything can be done and a lady said - "I am sorry we have to wait till the end of the month to see if it clears".
