Unacceptable in all facets of claim! Repair work done twice. Sloppy packing broke many items
I have been trying to finish a home insurance quote for a new home purchase for 3 weeks now. They refused to talk to my realtor, which would have made this so much easier because the realtor has all the information they require, and they were quite sassy about it as well. Instead, they have made me wait on hold for over an hour each time I try to call in before I speak to anyone. They did not tell me all of the follow-up questions that would be required when I first went back to my realtor with some of the gaps in my knowledge so I had to call back on two separate occasions to finish this quote. I even tried to request a callback on their website, for three or four different dates and they only called once and I missed their call. It is so frustrating trying to get a hold of these people. The ONLY reason I am with them is because of a discount that I receive through being a member of a professional body.
I missed one automated payment that I was unaware of and received a letter telling me they had cancelled my insurance and then proceeded to take yet another payment from me. Customer service was horrendous - I was yelled at, put on hold for 20 minutes, hung up on, called back yelled at again by a different representative - put on hold and then hung up on again. They told me I moved? Same home for over 18 years now! After paying them over $40000 over the years and being a loyal customer this is what I get? I would NOT recommend or trust them if you ever need to make a claim.
Do not waste your time here. If I could select zero stars I would. This company would not insure my home because of the breed of dog I own. The province I live in has zero laws about this breed of dog but somehow the Personal has a problem with it. BUT don’t worry, they will insure my dog... just as long as I don’t get any home insurance through them otherwise he can’t be at my address. So barbaric. So dated. So prejudice. A dog is as good as the owners raise it. Point blank. This company needs help. And when I called to inquire about the specifics of this rule the employee asked me to repeat myself about 13 times and by then I asked to be transferred to a manager, which I never got to because “she wasn’t available”. Don’t do it.
Impossible to contact and get help. Took me almost a month to get help for a flood the first time denied claim said they didn’t but approved the same claim later? When had concerns about anything you’ll never get past the contracted adjuster as they seem to be the gatekeepers of the company. They shared non-essential personal information with other agencies and anything they provide will be done from an office 1000s away by contracted companies whom if you have any problems with will be your problems, not the Personal's or any of their partners in profit. I had a heavy water leakage in my house due to rain. I called Personals Insurance. They sent a guy who went on the roof and came back with some pictures of the roof saying they will bring drying equipment. I called the next day as two rooms were soaking wet and with every rainwater dripped in. The guy sent by Personal said he doesn't have drying equipment and that he will call when he has it. I called multiple times but with the same reply. I had to buy heavy dehumidifiers and fans to dry up my house. I then hired a roofer to fix my roof. There was no reply for exactly two weeks from Personal's contractor. After two weeks when the house was completely dried and the roof was fixed the person called saying he is bringing drying equipment. This was ridiculous… I told him I couldn't keep house wet for two weeks for him to find drying equipment and I did not make a claim. Now I got a call from Personal saying I have to pay the deductible of $500 because I did not make a claim and I have to pay the deductible. Please be aware ...your house can fall dawn and this company will have not to do anything but you will pay the deductible. It is total FRAUD !!!
We used them for our last house, claims took forever to resolve, we broke down and just gave up on some things. I had to threaten to take legal action to have some necessary repairs done after a break and enter. Their hours are in the east of Canada so if you are in the west they close by 1:00 pm. I would not recommend to anyone I know.
Recently got a series of insurance quotes and found out I was paying $220 more per year for insurance with these people, the Personal, than I would be with any virtually any other companies. I cancelled the policy I had with them and they charged $60 to cancel - they don't mention this anywhere...These people are a rip-off and have about 4 people working in their call center in Nigeria, so you will be waiting for about 30-40 minutes on the phone on hold. Based on this kind of business practice, I'm happy to get out and cancel before something happens were I would regret it far more.
After 23 years as our home and car insurance provider, when we were in the midst of moving, they took a partial month payment and cancelled our home insurance. Our credit report says they listed "failure to pay" as the reason, so we took a hit even though it wasn't true. No phone call, nothing. They claim a registered letter went out but we never saw a thing and we live in a secured building. They did send us the renewal though, so we still don't understand what happened. When I called and asked them to do the right thing, the manager said he would investigate and come back in 48 hrs. A week later, still nothing. We cancelled our auto insurance with them because of it. We are astonished. If I had not called with the new address, we would never have known what they did and would have continued to pay home insurance rates to them. Guess they didn't have a problem obtaining payment after all. Incredible that they get to do whatever they want without recourse. Clearly, someone made an error on the wrong account and rather than correct it, they let us go after 2+ decades.

I had a very negative experience with Personal Insurance recently when I had to make a basement water damage claim. First of all, there was over almost two hours wait when I had to phone them. Secondly, their adjuster was ill-mannered, difficult and very slow in finalizing the claim. I will be switching to another company soon! Not recommended at all.
