5 out of 5 stars
Had house insurance with them for a number of years. Thought it was a little expensive, but it was close and convenient. This year renewal cost doubled. Over $2,000 more than competitors. Gave them the chance to review the costs and after a “thorough review of my insurance needs”, they dropped the cost to be in line with everyone else. Three months after the policy was paid in full, they demanded an additional $2,600, more than their original quote. After dealing with the agent, as the manager is uninterested in even talking to me, they adjusted the demand to $1,400 and sent me a letter stating my policy I paid for 3 months earlier was cancelled and I had an outstanding amount owing to renew the current policy. I have heard from many people in Langley who no longer do business with Westland that this is how they operate. Give you a quote, take your money and then 3 or 4 months later send you a bill for double what you were quoted. Do not do business with such untrustworthy and devious people.
We had home insurance for one year, and although we thought the cost was expensive we decided to renew for the following year. We paid for the year in full. Approx. 4 months later they contacted us and asked for an additional $400. We were very upset because the cost was already really high, and we had paid for the year in full. Finally, after a lot of arguing back and forth, we agreed to pay an additional $200. Year 3, we found a new insurer, same coverage, $1000 less. We sent an email letting them know we will not be renewing and we have coverage elsewhere. They insisted that we attend the office and sign paperwork to cancel. They called repeatedly. This harassment continued for several weeks. Yet, someone we knew forgot to renew and they cancelled his insurance promptly. To us, they kept insisting that by law, unless we sign specific papers, they cannot cancel the insurance coverage.
I was dealing with Westland Insurance out of Ucluelet for the last couple of years. I had 2 cabins insured with them. At the end of the vacation rental season in the fall, I asked to have the 1 cabin that was insured for 1 vacation rental changed to the same policy as my other 1 which was for personal use. I had to call their main office approx. 5 times. Waited and waited for a response from Will and Carly. Finally, after a week of me calling them and calling them, I find out from Carly that the policy that I wanted to change the rental unit to the personal use 1 that they had sold me, she now says wasn't even valid. If I would have had a claim, she tells me that I wouldn't have even been covered. I had paid for both policies upfront. I then phone back and ask to speak to Will who tells me, oh, ya, if anything would have happened, we would have covered you... Come on??? Do you really think people are that stupid??? Lies, lies, lies! I am 44 years old and have owned properties since I was 20. Dealt with many insurance companies over the years. This was by far the worst possible service and not to mention, got thoroughly RIPPED OFF.
No one called or came out when I called when my waterline broke. I had never had a claim (this is my second house insurance within them, my family has/HAD 7 homes insured through them as they took over a family insurance company), so I had no idea what to do. They did not show up or call so I called a repair company. They didn't remove all the drywall, only some, but told me that the insurance company told them what they can do. It's still not fixed, they haven't given me any $ AND they asked for some photos this year- I replied with photos (they told me I had until December, I said I could do it by August and did). I sent photos and in December received ancheque. No info. It was only 600$ so not for my claim. I just found it they cancelled my insurance with NO NOTICE in AUGUST. Quality service people. Quality. I won't even insure my car there again. I asked for my previous info and they called to confirm my identity and STILL, still haven't even emailed it to me. I'd rather beat my head against a wall than deal with them.
For over 10yrs had auto and home insurance with Westland. Sold house, bought renter policy. After 11 months, received renewal notice. Called up to accept the renewal and ask about getting a bit more liability (we had $2m, which is less than the house value, so wanted a bit more). A few days later they called back and said the policy they sold us did not cover us. I wonder what would have happened if we got a claim? They also said they didnt have any substitute policy.
I tehn bought a new policy from one of the Big 5 Banks, who treat their customers royally well, for 40% less than the same premium payment I had at Westland. Note also that even though our policy was not valid, Westland has not refunded premiums.
Very scary. Where are the regulators?
I have insured my business through westland insurance and recently found out that they have been overcharging me over 10,000 per year!! The manager Ross is extremely ignorant and basically told me I approved all the coverages. I am not an insurance expert, I rely on my broker to work in my best interest. They should have come up with a proper solution for my business at a fair price. After my dispute with Ross, they illegally cancelled my policy for non-payment. I have a full time book keeper that has never been late on any payments. She had informed me that no invoice was sent. I called in to Westland and another ignorant woman said that Ross had told her we were eventually going to cancel the policy, so do not send in an invoice. UNBELEIVABLE!!! I am so mad with this company, and am doing everything in my power to inform and educate people on what poor of a company Westland insurance is. I am NOT promoting any other business, just expressing my dealings with this awfully run business.
I was happy with Westland in the past. I joined them again 2 yrs ago. I was never aware of any penalty for cancelling with the policy year. I usually pay annually, but since my condo was on the market - I chose to go monthly payments. The condo will be transferred in April this year - but was sold in Jan. I spoke to a rep in Jan before the renewal - about the ending of my policy in April. He said that was fine and to still fill in a release doc. No one brought to my attention cancellation within the year following renewal. I assumed it was month to month - as I had a sale for my condo. Very disappointed to pay any amount - as I was not aware of this situation and thought that only a months notice is needed as for all other services.
After being with them for a few years claims free with multi policies, without any notice they made changes. I was given a letter stating a list of new exclusions one week before my insurance was due for renewal. It also stated I was expected to get a new hot water tank within a year ( mine is in excellent condition) . Although some of the staff are very nice, Maggie L. the branch manager at Evergreen Mall is very rude

We dealt with Westland Insurance in Nanaimo. The Agent was very professional and helpful. We were with a different company last year but she provided us with a quote that was comparable and cheaper, so we switched! Thank you for all your help!
