They cancelled our policy with very little notification and very poor customer service

by Deborah Schmidt on Sep 7, 2023
2 out of 5 stars

One week to go until my policy renewal and I was informed that they would not be renewing my insurance. They said we had 3 claims in 6 years. The first claim was for water damage in basement due to a corroded copper pipe. The 2nd so called claim - we didn't realize it was considered a claim was when the same pipe sprung another leak. We had called the insurance company but when we found out what it was we called a plumber and paid for the repair ourselves. Apparently since they called someone out to look at it and spent all of $127 it is considered a claim. The 3rd claim occurred last October when a neighbour had a fire. The flames were fiercely coming out of a bedroom window and it melted our shed and some siding. We had no control over that. In my estimation WE had ONE claim - the first one. They initially told us that if we provided proof that the siding was repaired and send a picture they would renew our policy. Liars! Didn't have the decency to even call during all of this. Just received an e-mail saying not renewing.

Leaking Basement

by Scott Aitken on Jul 14, 2023
1 out of 5 stars

Aviva has done nothing to get my basement leak fixed. The builder is not cooperating and the Aviva can't spend a very small amount of money to finally finish the basement.
Lots of phone calls, emails and nothing is fixed.

Stay Away!

by Beatriz Cabrera on May 23, 2023
1 out of 5 stars

Stay away from this company, because you will be dealing with your emergency and Aviva. I had a small claim and Aviva’s customer service is the worst service I’ve had in my life so far. I had to keep records of emails, sending up to 5 emails to receive the answer to the same question ( that happened multiple times). Our claim broker disappeared, in the middle of the process, and after two weeks of waiting for an email or a call, we had to call a 1-800 number to find out that someone else was in charge of our claim, and the 1-800 gave us the email for this person to send and wait again for answers. As I say I had a small claim and this insurance company turned it into a tragedy, I can’t imagine if I lose my house in a fire or earthquake and if I have to deal with these people … stay away!

Did you know that Ontarians pay, on average, $47/month in homeowners insurance? Looking to change your home insurance or simply want ensure that you do not overpay? Our home insurance quotes are among the most competitive.

They do their best to give you as little as possible.

I had a claim in the spring will ice on the roof causing water to enter and damage my floor and wall. We initiated the claim everything was going forward, they assured us it was all covered. Then I got a new insurance adjuster assigned to me, don't know if the original guy left the company or what the reason was. The new guy would say something was covered one day then try and back peddle the next day. He would call the contractor, who had already come and taken out flooring and ripped apart walls and ask the same questions that have been answered time and time again trying to stall and cut back. The damage happened in February, it is now December and his latest email said let's fix the walls now because he needs more time to figure out the flooring. My wife is now 7 months pregnant so when he finally commits to something we will have to move out while they do repairs with either a very pregnant wife or a newborn baby. This should have been settled months ago!

Avoid this company

by Marmar on Oct 13, 2022
1 out of 5 stars

Avoid this company! I can't believe how unprofessional and greedy this company has been throughout. I had my condo insurance with RBC, then RBC contracted to this miserable and unorganized company, they increase condo insurance by 25% every year, so greedy people. I have found very affordable insurance with another company and have been trying to cancel my insurance with this greedy company for a month now but no one is answering the phone or returning my calls. If they keep doing this I have no choice but to sue them in court.

Swindlers

My father was insured by Aviva and he passed away 3 weeks ago. I advised the broker so they would know the house was vacant. I still maintain the lawn service and the home alarm. I also have timers on different lamps and I visited the house once a week. Since I have advised the broker, Aviva has cancelled all coverage except fire, increased the deductible and premium, and charged for a vacancy permit. I still have not buried my father. My home insurance maintains the same coverage for 6 months after a person dies. Check your policy well.

Are you a condo unit tenant? Remember that neither your condominium corporations' policy nor your landlord's insurance policy protects you as a tenant (3rd part liability, contents, etc.). If you do not have your own insurance policy, get your condominium insurance quote today.

There for the builder not the home owner

by mark on Jun 22, 2022

Living in Alberta, I had new home insurance coverage provided by the builder. Getting close to the one-year anniversary, I provided the builder a list of outstanding items which he agreed to fix. Over the course of the next few weeks, I was unable to get these items fixed and the builder completely ignored my calls. I decided to make a claim with Aviva the insurer. It took them close to three months to tell me that the initial warranty period had lapsed so they wouldn't cover anything. How can you work with the builder (who obviously doesn't want claims) yet be penalized when the builder doesn't come through. Don't be duped by this insurance provider...

AVIVA is the worst insurance to deal with

by AVIVA on Jun 10, 2022
1 out of 5 stars

I had house insurance with AVIVA for years and I recently wanted to start a claim with them for my roof leak (because of heavy rain). They sent a person to go and check the damage and this person needed a long time (three weeks) to make the report and send it to the office (and only because I kept calling and asking what's happening). After that, the office needed three weeks to reply (and again only because I emailed to ask what's happening). They denied me coverage for my roof because they said the damage was because my roof was not installed properly 13 years ago. The roofing company said this was a ridiculous and incorrect reason. Then AVIVA and their broker (CAA) tried to come up with different reasons to deny my claim and tried to use scamming manipulative techniques to scare me (such as giving me higher prices than what's normal of how much my insurance will increase if I have a claim and that if I have a claim AVIVA will cancel my insurance when my policy expires which will affect/flag my insurance history). I did cancel my house insurance with AVIVA and I will never deal with them or CAA ever again. Both are scammers.

Declined everything

by Keith M on Jun 6, 2022
1 out of 5 stars

Had a wind event that blew off shingles in two locations on my house and delaminated 30% of my shingles. They sent a roofer out to cover the 2 locations with black shingles (originals are brown) with nails through the top and left it like that.
That’s all they would do, very disappointing!

No Contact

I have no online access to my account. I did have but apparently, they don't talk to other coworkers. One person gave me access then someone else changed the password. Why? I have no idea.
