Today I went to SGI to inquire about the next step in the process. What I learned is that if the sewer back up occurs as a result of an issue on the street the onus is on the city to repair. If the problem is in our yard, insurance will cover the cost. If the problem is located under our house then you are on the hook for the repairs.
In addition, should I choose to make this claim I lose my no claim benefit of five hundred dollars for three years? In the end, add the thousand dollar deductible plus the loss of no claim for three years and my total bill to make a claim is twenty-five hundred dollars.
SGI is a huge rip-off as I pay them a huge amount of over three thousand dollars a year for insurance and they don't want to cover anything... Save your money and go elsewhere
First, an adjustor comes to check the damage of the garage fire and says "well you are covered for $43,000.00, BUT we both know you WON'T get that." I took that easily enough as I DID NOT expect it. So I contacted a couple of places and got estimates, One of 33,000 and a second at 27,000. Ok.....adjuster says "No, these are still too high" Got another, for just the garage, and it was a package, costing just over $7000 to which he jumped at saying he would stroke the cheque out for. NOW it got interesting...Because the garage pad developed cracks and would be about $5000 to replace, but the adjustor said "The concrete expert said a garage pad would not sustain damage in a fire."... Even though I sent pictures of the pad and the cracks....and I had stated there was 1 crack in the pad when he was out! It got hot enough that a door inside, (an entry door) with the metal covering, was BENT over from the heat. The damage to the garage was so severe that the fire inspector could not even tell where it started in the garage. SO, now even more irritated, I move on, tired of the royal screwing by them, that I say to pay me out, 15,000 and we'll be done....he returned with a nope, if you want a payout, that would have to be worked out, as the depreciated value! I am totally lost with this entire system. Also, very sure that because I live in North Central, paying higher premiums, they treat me as the second rate only to get my premiums, and dance around the claim and coverage! I will make up a second review, once this gets settled....or if I go to a lawyer with this!
Run far away from SGI home insurance! I tried to make a claim for water damage and broken windows and doors due to breaking. Every single new thing that was found (as how it normally goes, you see more damage as you go along) was filed as a “new” claim (even tho they all related to the same incidents). They are just looking to get more deductibles. For the water damage, they would not send an adjuster, at my suggestion, said I could hire a plumber or home inspector to see where water damage came from (as it was not at all evident). So I pay ridiculously high premiums for 10+ years without ever making a claim, then I am told I can hire my own Inspector, and if it’s found that the damage is covered (which they will do anything to not cover it) the fees I pay out of my own pocket, work THEY are supposed to be doing would be reimbursed Not to mention the approx 10 hours of phone calls/emails/taking and retaking photos only to have the claims denied and one given the run-around and hoop-jumping (“go get quotes for only the panes of glass, we won’t cover the frames”). Such a nightmare! So, NOT use this for home insurance, I will be pulling all my policies
What a joke this company is. They not only refused my claim for fire damages on my tenant property but also cancelled my policy giving me 15 days notice. Stay away. They just look for reasons to not cover you.
I was away from my house for 4 days and when I got home it was 130 F in the house. My thermostat failed and the furnace continually ran. The person that came to fix the problem has worked on furnaces for 40 years and has never come across this problem. Needless to say there was over $60,000 of damage to the house including cracks, wall deformation, flooring damage and the list goes on. The appraiser came took some pictures and says "I got some bad news this is not covered because your thermostat is a wearing item". Now how can they say this is not covered when a professional furnace installation person has never seen this in 40 years. Good job, SGI, pull some more excuses...
Have had 3 break and enters in 4 months, the last break and enter I lost 20,000 dollars in property stolen,so I made a claim on the last one. my coverage was 10,000 max. I submitted the forms and then was told that that's blanket coverage (not when I bought it) 5 years ago. I was also told because I didn't have 80 percent coverage of my property value I am not covered. So a 4000 a year premium for 5 years for nothing! Not impressed. Not a phone call in the past 5 years regarding my coverage. If I was made aware of this at time of insurance purchase I simply wouldn't have. The brokers I purchased from misrepresented my insurance coverage, and has cost my family close to 40,000 from lost property and premiums.
Had a hail claim on my roof. 10 neighbors on my block all had hail claims too. 2 of us had SGI home insurance. 8 roofs were fixed, 2 were not. Guess which two? They said I did not have hail damage on my shingles, but they allowed a hail claim on my roof vents, chimney and air conditioner. So how can I have hail damage on those and not the shingles? They offered a $700 payment on those, but then my insurance rates would go through the roof. I am really scared that on a basic simple claim, should be a no-brainer, what happens if I had a house fire? I spoke with many people who shared the same story with me, and roofers all say don't even bother with SGI.
