Some of my family members in Calgary have the platinum home coverage through TD. Their policies state they are covered for flooding due to sewer back up. Their basements had to be gutted after the flood last month due to extensive damage from sewer back up. It took almost two weeks for an adjuster to contact them (conveniently, about the amount of time it took them to clean up) and then they were told they wouldn't be covered because their basements have windows! The adjuster told them not to worry, if TD doesn't cover them the government will! They're happy to take your money for premiums, but don't want to honour their policies. Sounds like a scam to me.
On my block all the other houses insured by someone other than TD Meloche Monnex have had an adjuster on site and have insurance to cover sewage backup. TD's adjusters do not work evenings, weekends or holidays (even during disasters like the Calgary Flood). On the phone everyone with TD has been told their claim would be denied even without sending anyone over. Aviva, State Farm, Intact and Chubb insure my neighbours and have provided them with quality service. 1 week after I filed my claim I'm still in limbo (yes I call every day). Why can't TD keep up with the other companies?
My insurance is with TD . They appear to be the only insurance company that has not stated that they will support their policyholders. Neighbours are all coverred - some fully and some to the limit of their sewage backup. I just got off the phone with a rather hostile person in the claims department at TD who said it will generally be two more weeks before policyholders get any word from them...so over 3 weeks from when the adjuster visited. And the claims person cited policy wording denying liability... so that is TD's stance. Some other companies' adjusters are cutting cheques on the spot. This is tough to swallow when it comes down to a corporate decision as to whether to allow claims or not. Other insurance companies have made a decision to support policyholders despite strict policy wording that they could choose to hide behind. But not TD! I expect others like me will never deal with TD again since their executives clearly are less suppportive of their policyholders.
